British Aircraft of WWII

A Royal Air Force Series

4 Intriguing Films on the RAF’s Most Celebrated World War II Aircraft

5 Hours on 4 discs of fascinating aviation history! Includes: Lancaster at War, Hawker Hurricane, Spitfire: The Birth of a Legend, and Battle of Britian .

Lancaster at War

The “Lanc”, and it was affectionately known, became one of the most famous and successful of the World War II night bombers, delivering more than 600,000 tons of bombs in 156,000 sorties. At a time when Hitler’s army had spread the Nazi creed and empire across occupied Europe, the heavy bomber like the Avro Lancaster was the only means of carrying the offensive back to the Nazi heartland.

See the Lanc’s involvement in some of the most controversial bombings. Then, hear exclusive interviews with surviving Lancaster aircrew and find out how they helped defeat the evil regime that threatened the entire world.

Hawker Hurricane

Capable of speed in excess of 300 mpg, the Hawker Hurricane was one of the most versatile fighters in the Royal Air Force’s fleet during World War II. Find out why the Hurricane, the first eight- gun monoplane fighter produced by Britain, played such a significant role in a major turning point in the war.

Then, get a taste of what it’s like to fly one! Sit in the cockpit for some stomach-wrenching aerobatic maneuvers and experience what it would have been like for the Battle of Britain pilots in the heart of a dogfight.

Spitfire: The Birth of a Legend

Hear how the legendary Supermarine Spitfire, conceived from a radical design, became a symbol of Britain’s determination during World War II. Celebrate the history of this acclaimed aircraft, the men who designed and built it, and those who flew and fought in it.

In this film, interviews with the pilots who flew the planes, and dramatic archive and color footage of the Spitfire in combat help illustrate the story of the legendary aircraft that fought in the summer skies over England in 1940. You’ll even hear from those who worked alongside R.J. Mitchell, the brilliant and visionary creator of the extraordinary fighter.

Battle of Britain

It is the most important event in the Royal Air Force’s history. Go back to the summer of 1940 in this three-part film. I The Few, examine the build-up to and the beginning of the Battle of Britain. Plus, find out how the RAF’s world-class fighters – the Hurricane and the Spitfire – held up versus enemy planes.

The Darkest Hour shows how the RAF and the Luftwaffe each succeeded of failed in separate attacks until the Germans made a mistake. In The Blitz, see how Hitler decided to move the bombing strategy away from the airfields and to civilian London, a choice that would ultimately end in a loss for Germany.

British Aircraft of WWII
Got for Christmas, it's good. Basic over view of aircraft and history. Seems a little long on the interviews of pilots and crew.
