Daphne du Maurier’s gothic tale of danger and romance in 1820s Cornwall

Orphaned by her mother’s death, Mary Yellan (Jessica Brown Findlay, Downton Abbey) travels to Cornwall to join her aunt, Patience (Joanne Whalley, Wolf Hall). Arriving at the isolated Jamaica Inn, Mary is met by a brutish, menacing man—her uncle, Joss (Sean Harris, The Borgias). She soon learns that no guests stay at the inn, and Joss is part of a savage gang of smugglers. Meanwhile, she’s drawn to the handsome, mysterious Jem Merlyn (Matthew McNulty, The Paradise), Joss’s younger brother.

Set in 1821 against a backdrop of windswept Cornish moors, this dark tale of “sex and skulduggery in Du Maurier country” (The Times, UK) has been lavishly directed by BAFTA winner Philippa Lowthorpe (Call the Midwife) and adapted by Emma Frost (The White Queen). Also starring Ben Daniels (House of Cards) and Shirley Henderson (Bridget Jones’s Diary), the “moodily atmospheric” (Daily Mail, UK) drama follows a spirited young woman whose sense of morality is challenged by circumstance and love.

BONUS Behind-the-scenes footage (9 min.), cast and crew interviews (26 min.), and a photo gallery . Episode 1
Mary Yellan hopes to make a new home with her aunt Patience and uncle Joss at their remote inn in Cornwall. Instead, she finds herself among a violent band of smugglers in a lawless land. Navigating the perils of her new life, she spars with Joss’s younger brother, Jem, and witnesses a gruesome event.

Episode 2
Trapped in a desolate place, Mary fears for her innocence. She knows that Joss is not the smugglers’ leader, but Patience won’t tell her who is. With nowhere else to turn, Mary confides in the local vicar, Francis Davey, and his sister, Hannah. Later, a drunken Joss shares terrible secrets with Mary.

Episode 3
Mary experiences the depths of the smugglers’ evil as they lure a ship onto the rocks, then murder the crew. As the law closes in, Jem has a choice to make. Joss and Patience make plans to flee to Devon. After another grisly discovery, Mary goes to the only people she trusts: Vicar Davey and his sister . Jessica Brown Findlay... Mary Yellan
