Great show, bad Blu-ray
I loved this show and I give the show itself 5/5 stars - just as I loved the similarly-themed 90s show Earth 2, which was also cancelled prematurely before its time - and I couldn't wait to experience Outcasts on Blu-ray. Sadly, this Blu-ray release is a disaster.

I was going to give the Blu-ray 1/5 stars, but I decided to give it 2/5 stars because at least this show is available on Blu-ray, despite all the flaws. Some modern shows I want to buy on disc - in order to have the highest possible quality (as long as they're encoded with high bitrates) compared to streaming or download such as iTunes - are unthinkably only available on DVD and not Blu-ray. So at least we have this show on Blu-ray... but the problems are pretty bad.

The series was shot digitally in 1080p with the Arri D-21 camera system - but for some unthinkable reason, the Blu-ray is 1080 interlaced - I absolutely couldn't believe it! And I couldn't believe that the product page didn't list this specification, because it's a pretty big deal. When consumers buy a Blu-ray today, they expect 1080p. Not interlaced!

Not only that... the show is presented 1.78:1 on Blu-ray, but Outcasts cinematographer Adam Suschitzky shot the show with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, purposefully using the Arri D-21 camera system for its unique MScope feature and actual anamorphics.

The worst thing is that you can actually get a taste of how amazing the show should be, because the episode previews use the 2.40:1 aspect ratio that the show was filmed in! When you see those episode previews, you just die knowing that this amazing, cinematic, original version exists but it's not on Blu-ray. It would have been a fantastic selling feature of the Blu-ray to offer the amazing visuals in this show according to the original cinematic vision of the cinematographer.

Lastly, the audio on this Blu-ray is a let-down with Dolby Digital 2.0.

Oh, one more thing - don't look for great making-of content here. There's a couple of bonus features in this set, but they're standard definition, and they're more like promotional pieces than serious behind-the-scenes features.

Such a disappointment. Love the show, and recommend it. But I do not recommend this Blu-ray release.

I hope BBC come to their senses and give this show a proper Blu-ray release. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, no questions asked. Sign me up now!

Great Start
Seemed to be a pretty good show with a lot of potential, until the BBC canceled it
