Narrated by Tamsin Greig (Shaun of the Dead), Royal Cousins at War is a 2-part series that tells the story of the three monarchs who reigned over Europe’s Greatest powers at the outbreak of the First World War—Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and King George V of England. The emerging divisions and rivalries between the inter- related houses of Europe brought change, tragedy and personal humiliation. While it was war that delivered the final blow, this fascinating series shows how the rot had set in much earlier and how the European royals contributed to their demise. Mismanaging their countries and mishandling foreign policy, they failed to adapt to the forces of nationalism and democracy, and so brought tumbling down their own ideal of a Europe governed by the descendants of Queen Victoria. Of the four great Imperial dynasties – Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia and Great Britain – only George V, the least personally powerful, remained standing. Monarchy, for centuries the prime form of governance in Europe, was finished as a serious political force.. Episode List
A House Divided
The first episode tells the story of the emerging divisions and rivalries between the interrelated royal houses of Europe and features the little known story of the two Danish sisters, Princess Alexandra and Princess Dagmar, who had pulled off the dynastic coup of the 19th century by marrying the heirs to both the British and Russian thrones. Following the invasion of their native Denmark by Prussia in 1864 during the Wars of German Unification, the sisters became the core of an anti-Prussian coalition that prefigured the great anti-German alliance of 1914. Their sons, King George V and Tsar Nicholas II were close friends.

Into the Abyss
This looks at the realignment of the European powers and the emergence of the alliance system in the years following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. It examines the key role played by royalty in smoothing the path to the Anglo- Russian entente of 1907, and at the part played by the Kaiser's erratic, unstable personality in the growing isolation of Germany in the years leading up to 1914.

Interesting History
I bought this some time ago and never had a chance to watch it. Finally one night I did and I was fascinated by the history of these three cousins. First of all, they look alike. But I was most interested in the history of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Thank you so much for such a momentous DVD with plenty of pictures, letters and facts about what happened before and during WWI.

Royal Tragedy
This video is an excellent overview of a Royal tragedy which, on the surface, should never have happened. However, due to unfortunate situations which occurred in the lives of George V of Great Britain, William II of Germany, and Nicholas II of Russia, all of them related by blood or marriage to Queen Victoria, conflict came and their nations found themselves in a long and bloody war which saw the demise of the German and Russian empires. The use of early color film of ceremonial in Berlin and military reviews in India during the Durbar of 1911 are well worth the price. Overall, an excellent slice of history!
