With the aid of the victim's best friend, Clara Morrow (Kate Hewlett, Degrassi: The Next Generation), they begin to unravel sordid secrets, upending life in the seemingly utopian village. While Clara becomes increasingly involved in helping the inspectors, newcomer Agent Yvette Nichol (Susanna Fournier, Being Human) challenges Gamache with some unconventional theories of her own. If you forget (of don't know) the source book this film is OK
This film is a competent police procedural, set in Quebec's Eastern Township (beautifully shot). It stars Nathanial Parker, always an interesting actor to watch, but somewhat miscast in this case. The reason given for a Francophone Canadian speaking with an upper class English accent just is not plausible. Anthony Lamke, in a supporting role, is very good and fits the part he plays. Viewers who are familiar with the source book may be disappointed with the film version. It fails to capture the warm relationships that the lead character has with his wife and colleagues, as described in the book, or the depth of feelings that exist among long-time residents in a small town (which are central to the plot).. The cast is generally good, albeit younger than expected. On its own terms, the film is OK, however.
